Horn and Ivory Mounted Sunday stick
Date: 1900
Country: English
These walking sticks are called Sunday Sticks. Due to an act of Parliament in the late 19th century the participation in all sports was banned on a Sunday and the carrying of sports equipment outlawed on the Sabbath. The then Vicar of St. Andrews who used to enjoy hitting a few balls in whilst striding across the greens on his way to deliver his sermon was left in somewhat of a pickle He did not want to break the law but could not see the point in it. Luckily his parishioners came to the rescue one of them a Legal Eagle studied the resolution and found a loop hole. By creating a walking stick with a golf club head the law as it was passed was not being broken so they made the vicar the first golfing stick. The sermons were delivered happily and the vicar and congregation were at peace. Gradually this whole practice evolved and the Sunday Club was born.
