The devils head in carved in wood with suitably demonic expression. The gilt metal collar which holds the head in place is turned through a half turn to free up the head.  The ferrule end of the stick is unscrewed to reveal the knife which will decapitate the devil!  One cuts the head off the stick but the devil refuses to die, he remains attached to the stick no matter how many times you try to cut his head off! That’s magic!
