Fashioned with an ivory hand top which is holding a roll of material this cane was used to  measure lengths of fabric for use in haberdashery.  The Malacca shaft is brass studded in 1cm distances with a double dot at each 10cm.  As the walking cane would be too long at a metre’s length the last 10cm is concealed under the ivory hand.  The hand can be pulled up to find a further steel extension to the measure.
