California Gold Quartz Stick
Date: 1860
Country: U.S.A
An exceptional trophy from the days of the California Gold Rush. The art of using gold quartz to make decorative objects is unique to the United States, and usually from California.
Gold quartz canes and sticks appeared at the time of the California Gold Rush, in the years between 1848 and approximately 1864. This one is quite special, the handle is yellow gold of a high level of purity with an unsigned cartouche to its knuckle. The gold is finely engraved with arabesque scrolls and set into its open end is a bevelled oval panel of Gold Quartz. The top is mounted on a Gutta Percha shaft with a further gold band. A very extravagant walking stick.
